My Hobbies

Hobbies are so important in life, they provide an outlet from the every day stress that you get with life in general, especially in most cases, work. It also applies to young people, maybe its the stress of taking exams or for many other reasons so it's essential to have an outlet for relaxation and enjoyment. At the other end of the age Spectrum, Retirement!, If you have been a work alcoholic all your life, to suddenly come to a stop can also be very stressful. Decorating the house and helping the grown up kids only goes so far. Then you find you empty days, what to do. Take up Golf?, well that wasn't for me despite having a surname of Faldo, shame though someone else in the family got all the talent in that respect. I found despite having a hobby. found that it took a couple of years to finally let go but an organisation like U3A (University of the Third Age) was a great start for me.

BDPC.

I had previously mentioned, that I joined the club in 2005, kicking off my main hobby, Photography. Yes, overtime, I have had the big expensive cameras and lenses which helps if you wish to specialise in subjects such as wildlife, but realistically, they are not essential in creating good photographs. So many other factors are involved which bt attending the camera club taught me.

Many members at the club create excellent photos with compact and inexpensive cameras and now what with smartphones, the excellent quality and portability, they will just be used more and more. I for one am using the phone most of the time.

In essence, to take a photograph, you have to be in the right place, at the right time, with a camera. The iphone comes into is own in this respect.

I have been a member of U3A Upminster Branch since 2020, first joining their photography group, then the Walking with Wildlife group, to which I always take a camera.

The photography group meets once a month, generally in London but there are occasional trips further a field, e.g Brighton

U3A is a fascinating organisation, which tries to provide something for everyone, whether it be coach outings, bridge groups, longer walks, history, STEM, genealogy, the list is endless and needless to say, I have joined another group nearer to my heart, The Beer Tasting Group where we have alternate meetings in three local Tap Rooms plus there is generally a monthly outing exploring pubs a little further away.

All groups are very friendly, helpful and it's just a pleasure to meet up with new friends.
